2022 Ford Bronco Reviews and Insights

FORD BRONCO: Watch out Jeep Wrangler. There's another highly capable SUV ramped up for off-roading and it's coming for you.

PROS: Fun to drive; remarkable all-terrain capabilities; eight trims means you can get the capabilities you need; and highly customizable.

CONS: Interior is lackluster for the Bronco's price tag; low mpg; V6 engine comes standard only on the top tier trim and doesn't come with a manual transmission.

VERDICT: If you're looking for an SUV that rivals Jeep models (especially the Wrangler), the Bronco offers a compelling and exciting alternative.

Does it have any competitors or rivals?

What’s interesting about the BRONCO?

- The Bronco comes with a convertible top, a choice between two- and four-doors, and removable doors, making it tempting to compare it to the Jeep Wrangler.

- Two engines are available: a turbocharged four-cylinder or a twin-turbo V6, which are loud gas guzzlers that come alive when off-roading.

- We recommend the High and Sasquatch packages if you need additional enhancements for your adventures.

- Despite its capabilities in the wilderness, the Bronco is also fun to drive around town and offers impressive cabin space.

How about the prices and trims?

Two new trims join the Bronco lineup, Everglades and Raptor, making eight trim levels. That may sound overwhelming, but if you're serious about making the Bronco the SUV of your dreams, this level of customization is essential. If you're looking for a smaller but still competent version of the Bronco, take a look at our review of the Bronco Sport.

Deciding on the proper trim boils down to what is most crucial to your driving experience. Easy-to-use infotainment, smooth handling, and creature comforts that don't feel outdated are essential. Safety programs such as a lane-keeping system only come standard on the Outer Banks trim and upwards. Before committing to a trim, we recommend looking closely at the standard list of features you're considering.

Which one do we recommend?

When it comes to the Bronco, it depends on your needs. Unless you need a V6, we think the Raptor is over the top for the average driver. The price jumps between trims also don't seem significant until you look at the long list of options. So, we recommend the Outer Banks. It has many of the features the average driver would need without going overboard. The price tag may feel steep, but we think it's worth it.

What about its availability?

The Bronco is elusive, and most shoppers will need to order it from the dealership. Considering how customizable it is, that may not be the worst thing.

What about its performance and handling?

- No matter which trim you choose, the Bronco's overall performance is smooth and dynamic, so by all means, go and explore the world

- All trims except the Raptor get equipped with a turbo four-cylinder that pushes a thrilling 300 horsepower. Manual and automatic transmissions are available for most trims. FWD comes standard.

- A twin-turbo V6 engine reaches 400 hp and gets paired with an automatic transmission. Unfortunately, it's only available for the Raptor.

- Ford made extensive efforts to increase the Bronco's capabilities by improving its suspension, adaptive dampers, and various chassis upgrades. Of course, if those aren't enough, optional packages are available too.

What makes the Bronco truly impressive is that it's fun to drive on city streets. Often, SUVs that are so beefy feel stiff in town. Thanks to an independent front suspension, the Bronco was smooth the entire time, though no one could ignore the loud engine or all the air and noise sneaking into the cabin. The Jeep Wrangler does not compare.

In addition to these features, the Bronco can also tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

How’s the interior?

Cabin Space

Another favorite feature of the Bronco is its spaciousness. Adults have plenty of room in the backseat and still have room for equipment in the cargo area. It's easy to remove the top and the doors, which can get stored in the cargo area. Shoppers who want as much space as possible should consider the four-door version, which comes with a third middle seat and twice as much cargo space as the two-door. The optional marine-grade vinyl upholstery and rubberized flooring ensure that the interior gets protected when you're off-roading.

Sadly, the cabin features a lot of cheap-looking plastic. Even if drivers upgrade to include leather upholstery or specialized enhancement, they won't get rid of that look. It's a problem across the board for Ford this year, and we hope this issue will improve over time.

Infotainment and connectivity

We typically recommend shoppers stay away from Ford's infotainment program Sync and always go for the Sync 3 upgrade. All Broncos come with Sync 4 on either an eight- or twelve-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and access to FordPass Connect come standard. However, you'll need to cough up the difference if you want exciting extras such as a wireless charging pad, a 10-speaker sound system, or a voice-activated navigation system.

LIKES: Most of the basics get included even on the lower-end trims. As is the case with everything else related to the Bronco, shoppers have the power to customize the infotainment to precisely what they want and need.

DISLIKES: Looks cheap no matter how much you dress it up.

How about the technology and features?

The technology is easy-to-use and overall convenient. We wish all this tech matched the cabin's look, especially in the front.

LIKES: There's no shortage of charging ports throughout the cabin for all your electronics. The heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate control do the job quickly and efficiently.

DISLIKES: Some tech features, such as the remote start system, are only available for specific configurations.

Quick Quirks: If you're going to get the two-door version of the Bronco, note that getting in and out of the backseat can get tricky for adults since the front seats don't slide up enough.

Some additional features:

- There's nothing subtle about the Bronco, including the large buttons throughout the cabin. Drivers wearing gloves will find this especially helpful.

- The ergonomic design of the cabin means all features remain easily accessible no matter how you move the steering wheel and driver's seat.

-               Keep in mind that the tailgate swings outward like a door instead of upwards. Loading can become tricky if you don't have lots of space around your SUV.

-

How's the exterior?

The Bronco's exterior echoes the Wrangler's but cranks up the cool factor a few notches. This design is simultaneously nostalgic and modern, making it timeless in our book. We'd recommend opting for the soft-top roof and removing the doors whenever possible. Go ahead and feel the wind – who cares if you can't hear every word of your favorite song? You know it already anyway.

Plenty of features are available to enhance this look, depending on the trim you pick. Adding a towing package is a must if you intend to do any off-roading, and it's worth considering the roof rails, the heavy-duty front bumper, and the brush guard.

What warranty and safety does it offer?

All Broncos come with the basic safety features you expect in 2022 and a standard warranty program:

- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates this model five out of five stars.

- All trims include a lane-keeping system, cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

- Limited warranty for 36,000 miles or three years.

- Powertrain warranty for 60,000 miles or five years.

- Roadside assistance is provided for 60,000 miles or five years.

Are there any incentives and rebates for the BRONCO?

Ford offers incentives to U.S. military personnel, veterans, college students, recent graduates, and first responders. Some franchise dealerships may offer additional incentives and rebates. Check with your local Ford dealer to learn more.
