FORD F-150 LIGHTNING: America's classic truck is now available as a plug-in.
PROS: Relatively affordable for an EV pickup; an optional extended-range battery is available; and four very well-equipped trims are available.
CONS: Towing often or for long distances can significantly decrease the truck's EV range; crew cab and 5.5-footbed are the only choices available.
VERDICT:

What’s interesting about the F-150 Lightning?
- With the standard battery pack and a full charge, the Lightning averages 230 miles. That number jumps to 300 miles with the extended-range battery.
- Overall, the Lightning is similarly built to the regular F-150 but with fewer trims from which to choose.
- Compared to other EV trucks, the F-150 Lightning is one of the most affordable models.
- Besides the impressive prowess of the Lightning, the cabin offers spaciousness, ergonomics, and overall good looks.
How about the prices and trims?
Four trims are available for this pickup (compared to eight on the regular F-150). Prices begin at shy of $40,000 with the base trim, while Platinum, the top-tier trim, costs $90,874. The price jumps between trims may seem extreme, but consider that you never have to get gas when driving this truck again.
All trims come with two electric motors that generate either 430 horsepower or 563 horsepower, depending on whether you opt for the extended-range battery. All-wheel drive comes standard. One of the key differences between the motors is their towing capacity, which ranges from 2,000 and 10,000.
Which one do we recommend?
If you can afford it, we recommend going for the Lariat trim. It's pricey, but many of the standard features make the cabin more comfortable and valuable. Otherwise, we recommend the XLT, though you may miss several infotainment features. Regardless of which one you choose, we recommend adding the extended-range battery, more safety features, and one of two towing packages.
What about its availability?
As of right now, Lightning is only available by ordering through Ford's website. Eventually, the Lightning will be available at dealerships nationwide. Get in touch with your local Ford dealer if you have questions about specific packages or features.
What about its performance and handling?
- At the moment, all-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive will likely become an option in the future.
- Drivers can choose between four driving modes to get the best driving experience: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, and Tow/Haul.
- A fully independent rear suspension ensures a comfortable and nimble ride.
- If this is your first experience with an EV vehicle, it will take time to get used to charging instead of filling up, but it will become second nature in no time.
One of the exciting aspects of Lightning is the power available to drivers. The standard dual-motor generates 426 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. When appropriately equipped, the Lightning can tow up to 2,000 pounds, which will reduce the average range of 230 miles. An optional extended-range battery intended for drivers who go on long trips and tow often produces 563 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. With those motors, the average range shoots up to 300 miles on a full charge, and the towing capacity grows to 10,000 pounds.
How’s the interior?
Cabin Space
Since there's no engine, the Lightning also has a frunk (front trunk) that can make storing tools or cargo convenient. The frunk also features four outlets, two USB charging ports, and has a drain so it can get used as a cooler. The cabin itself seats five and offers a variety of cubbies and storage areas. Notable features include a lockable storage bin underneath the rear seats, a fold-out table in the center console, and reclining front seats for that essential mid-day nap. A 5.5-foot bed isn't the longest bed option available among Ford pickups, but it can haul plenty. Unlike other models this year, the Lightning's cabin is full of poise and style.
Infotainment and connectivity
Ford packs plenty of exciting infotainment features on all four trims. Standard features on the base trim include Sync 4, Ford's infotainment program that regularly updates information about the Lighting's range, local charging stations, and more. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto get included as well. Opting for the Lariat upgrades the infotainment screen from 12-inches to 15, making it easier to see all of the buttons and features available. This trim adds a wireless charging pad and an eight-speaker (as opposed to six) sound system. Platinum upgrades the sound system to 18 speakers.
LIKES: We're excited about the XLT and Lariat trims because they feel modern and exciting, thanks to features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and a power-sliding rear window.
DISLIKES: Many optional packages are expensive though they offer crucial features we know drivers will want.
How about the technology and features?
Before purchasing an EV vehicle such as Lightning, it's crucial to understand the charging process. Unlike a gas-motor hybrid that charges the battery as you drive, this truck needs to get plugged in to have any power. We recommend installing a 240-volt outlet so that you can charge quickly and efficiently (as opposed to a standard 120-volt household outlet). Drivers that opt for the extended-range battery also will receive a Ford Charge Station Pro for free, which will help recharge your battery quicker.
In a pinch, the Lightning could provide enough electricity to power a home. To learn more about this option, contact Ford to learn about adding a power inverter. Additionally, several household-style electrical plugs come standard across the pickup so that drivers can use devices as needed.
LIKES: Ford is also looking into ways to help save drivers money on their electricity bills during peak hours. Installing the home charging station may seem like a pain, but it's worth it when you need to recharge in a short amount of time.
DISLIKES: It takes at least 10 hours to fully charge the Lightning on a 240-volt outlet.
Quick Quirks: Drivers can use their smartphones to lock/unlock, turn on/off, and warm up or cool down their F-150 Lightning. |
Some additional features:
- A Class IV trailer hitch comes standard, but we recommend considering either of the towing packages to ensure your Lightning is ready to tow.
- If you get the XLT trim, we recommend adding optional features such as a power tailgate and adaptive cruise control.
- It's worth considering adding the BlueCruise driving assistant that allows for hands-free driving, which Ford is slowly making available on select vehicles and trims.
How's the exterior?
Externally, the F-150 Lightning adds a few touches to give it a more futuristic look than a regular F-150. When put side by side, you can see differences in the front grille, the hood (thanks to the frunk), and the lightning-shaped LED lights that run across the front. The Lightning is handsome and looks like it's ready to work as soon you start it. Optional features to enhance these looks include a moonroof, extra lights for the bed, and larger tires.
What warranty and safety does it offer?
Each Lightning trim offers a different combination of safety features, but even the base trim includes some of the more popular ones. The warranty program is average:
- The F-150 Lightning received five out of five stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- Standard features include blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, automatic emergency braking, and a lane-keeping system.
- If you can afford it, add either adaptive cruise control or BlueCruise.
- Limited warranty for 36,000 miles or three years.
- Electric powertrain warranty for 100,000 miles or eight years.
- Complimentary scheduled maintenance not included.
Are there any incentives and rebates for the F-150 Lightning?
Ford offers incentives to U.S. military personnel, veterans, college students, recent graduates, and first responders. Some franchise dealerships may offer additional incentives, rebates and manager's specials. Get in touch with your local Ford dealer to learn more. Additionally, local and federal governments offer tax credits for owning an EV vehicle. For more information about tax credits, contact your local government office.
