2022 Ford Escape Plug-in Reviews and Insights

FORD ESCAPE PLUG-IN: One of the most efficient plug-in compact SUVs on the market and worth a test drive

PROS: One of the most efficient plug-in SUVs on the market; spacious cabin; many safety features come standard; multiple driving modes; and a zippy exterior.

CONS: Some drivers might find the driving experience too clunky or stiff and the interior isn't eye-catching.

VERDICT: If you're looking for a plug-in small SUV that is highly efficient and practical, test drive the Escape plug-in hybrid.

Does it have any competitors or rivals?

Toyota RAV4 plug-in, Hyundai Santa Fe, and BMW X5 xDrive45e

What’s interesting about the ESCAPE PLUG-IN?

- This version of the Escape is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which means the batteries get charged through a wall outlet, charging equipment, or regenerative braking. (A regular hybrid recharges while the car engine runs.)

- Powering the Escape is a 2.5-liter iVCT I-4 engine with front-wheel drive. Unlike other Escape models, all-wheel drive is not available for this version.

- An eCVT transmission helps smooth out the bumpiness of the engine, especially when drivers choose Sport mode.

- The engine pumps out 221 horsepower and averages 37 mpg on a single charge which puts the Escape in second place for prowess and efficiency after the RAV4.

How about the prices and trims?

The SE trim starts at nearly $34,000, while Titanium, the top tier trim, only costs $5,000 more. While opting for the top-tier trim isn't always necessary, Titanium does elevate the interior with extra flair.

You can expect a lively ride, an exceptionally spacious cabin, and plenty of standard features no matter which trim you choose. As is the case with the hybrid version of the Escape (reviewed separately), the plug-in version does away with the basic S trim that lacked many features we think are essential. Moreover, this model has not changed much compared to the 2021 versions.

Most drivers would likely feel satisfied with the SE or SEL trims, but the Titanium elevates an otherwise cheap-looking interior. Features such as a hands-free, foot-activated liftgate, leather upholstery, and a 12.3-inch instrument display (as opposed to 6.5 inches) can make all the difference for the busy commuter.

Which one do we recommend?

Considering the (relatively) small price gap between the SE and Titanium, we vote for going all in and treating yourself to the top-tier trim. If you're not keen on all those extras, such as leather seats and LED lights, opt for the SEL for a slightly elevated cabin.

What about its availability?

The Ford Escape plug-in is available at Ford dealerships nationwide. Get in touch with your local dealer to determine which trim matches your needs best.

What about its performance and handling?

- We prefer to drive the hybrid and plug-in versions of the Escape not only for their fuel efficiency but also for the smoother handling.

- Five driving modes ensure a versatile experience and support for drivers with an active lifestyle.

- Recharging the Escape takes 3.5 hours at a 240-volt Level 2 charger or 10 hours on a household plug.

- Most drivers can't tell when the Escape switches from electric to gas modes while driving in the city.

How’s the interior?

Cabin Space

One of our favorite features about the Escape is its spacious cabin. Most adults will feel relaxed in the backseat, there's plenty of room in the front, and the cargo area can fit lots of suitcases and gear. The rear seat has a 60/40-split and slides, which makes loading this SUV a piece of cake. The chairs offer plenty of comfort, despite not offering extra lumbar support. Ford also adds extra touches such as a driver's footrest to make long drives more pleasant.

Practicality rules the cabin, evident by the many storage spaces and USB ports. Unfortunately, Ford has sacrificed style and many of the materials look cheap and plasticky. The Titanium trim can help mitigate this with leather seats and privacy glass, but it will bother some drivers. If you want a PHEV with some luxurious notes, check out the BMW X5 xDrive45e.

Infotainment and connectivity

All three trims get equipped with an 8-inch infotainment display that includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and access to FordPass Connect. With the FordPass app, drivers can turn on, heat up, or cool down their vehicle from their smartphone. Titanium also comes with a voice-activated navigation system that's not great but good to have if your smartphone doesn't work. The SE, SEL, and Titanium trims have Sync 3, Ford's infotainment program, which works far better than the regular Sync. (Thankfully, the S trim isn't available for this version.)

LIKES: Plenty of infotainment means you'll have all the programs you need on long drives, be they road trips or daily commutes.

DISLIKES: All three trims come with a six-speaker audio system, and we wish at least one would come with high-end speakers.

How about the technology and features?

Besides comprehensive infotainment, the Escape also features lots of safety programs. A few examples are a rearview camera with rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping alert, and forward-collision warning. Additionally, keyless entry, push-button start, and a steering wheel with cruise control and audio controls come standard.

LIKES: Most drivers will find the cabin's overall design and technology exceedingly practical. Multiple charging ports mean everyone has room to plug in their devices.

DISLIKES: The Ice Blue instrument panel cluster lighting will distract some drivers, mainly when driving in poorly-lit areas.

Quick Quirks: Because the Escape is a hybrid plug-in, you can always drive the car without recharging it if you don't have the time. However, doing so will reduce your overall fuel efficiency.

Some additional features:

- It's no surprise the Escape has a five-star safety rating considering all of the safety programs that come standard on all trims.

- The dual-zone climate control feature means everyone can feel comfortable; however, this feature is slightly less efficient on PHEV and hybrid models.

- For anxious drivers, an additional Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ program is available for more safety features.

How’s the exterior?

Despite our complaints about the interior, we think the exterior captures the sporty nature of a compact SUV. After all, the point is to offer the fuel efficiency of a sedan mixed with the capabilities and prowess of a larger SUV. The wide front grille, sculpted sides, and curvy edges give the Escape an athletic look. Ford also lightly decorated the exterior with a rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, and stylized lights.

One of the more significant differences between the trims is the liftgate. SE comes with a manual version, the SEL offers a power version, and Titanium has a hands-free, foot-activated version. Additionally, climbing up the trims will add fancier lights (halogen versus LED fog lights) and additional privacy glasses for the back.

What warranty and safety does it offer?

The Escape plug-in comes with many safety features and a standard warranty program:

- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates this model five out of five stars.

- All trims include the SOS Post-Crash Alert System, lane-keeping system, cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

- Limited warranty for 36,000 miles or three years.

- Powertrain warranty for 60,000 miles or five years.

- No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Are there any incentives and rebates for the Escape Plug-In?

Ford offers incentives to U.S. military personnel, veterans, college students, recent graduates, and first responders. Some dealerships may offer additional incentives and rebates. To learn more about these options, visit your local Ford dealership. Additionally, local and federal governments offer tax credits for owning a PHEV vehicle. For more information about tax credits, contact your local government office.
