2022 Ford Escape Hybrid Reviews and Insights

FORD ESCAPE HYBRID: Practical, spacious, and a hybrid to boot

PROS: Spacious; high fuel efficiency; sporty good looks; affordable for a hybrid; not much gets sacrificed from the regular Escape.

CONS: The interior lacks character; the engine and motors don't accelerate as quickly as we hoped; the handling is better than the regular Escape, but some might still find it lacking.

VERDICT: Do yourself a favor: get yourself a hybrid and test drive the Escape.

Does it have any competitors or rivals?

Lexus NX hybrid, Volkswagen Tiguan hybrid, and Honda CR-V hybrid

What’s interesting about the ESCAPE HYBRID?

- The hybrid trims are similar to the regular and plug-in Escape, which get reviewed separately.

- All three trims get equipped with a 2.5-liter I-4 hybrid engine, an eCVT transmission, and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is also available.

- In terms of affordability, the Titanium hybrid costs less than the standard Titanium, so drivers can have all the creature comforts and save plenty on fuel.

- The Escape hybrid averages 40 mpg, making it one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the market.

How about the prices and trims?

Only three trims are available for the hybrid: SE, SEL, and Titanium. SE starts at $29,170, but the Titanium is nearly $5,000 more. All three come well equipped with Ford's latest features, though Titanium takes the cake.

The Escape hybrid offers a zippy drive, a spacious interior, and a reasonable price tag, making it a top pick in its segment. Unlike the regular Escape, the hybrid version does away with the S trim, which lacks the comforts other trims provide. Shoppers who have been eyeing this model for a while should note that not much has changed between 2021 and 2022.

While we find the SE and SEL well-equipped, the Titanium comes with higher-end features worth considering. Leather seats, LED lights, fog lamps, and a hands-free, foot-activated liftgate are a few of the more exciting elements you can expect on the Titanium.

Which one do we recommend?

We don't always go for the top-tier trim because it often comes with extras the average driver needs. However, if you're going to go for the Escape hybrid, add a few thousand and treat yourself to the Titanium.

What about its availability?

The 2022 Ford Escape hybrid is available at dealerships across the nation. Visit your local Ford dealer to test drive one today.

What about its performance and handling?

- The Escape hybrid is one of the few compact SUVs powered by a turbocharged engine to give this vehicle extra oomph.

- All-wheel drive is an option on all trims, but we wouldn't add it unless its a must for an active lifestyle.

- The hybrid engine and motors combination generates an impressive 221 horsepower, which rivals both the Tiguan and the CR-V.

- Drivers looking for an exceptionally smooth ride will find the Escape too rough, but commuters might enjoy the versatility.

As with the regular Escape, the hybrid version also offers five driver levels: Eco, Sport, Normal, Slippery, and Deep Snow/Sand modes. Sport helps smooth out the bumpiness of normal mode, while eco optimizes fuel efficiency. Drivers who intend to use their Escape to traverse the wilderness will find the other two modes especially helpful. We highly recommend test driving this SUV to determine if the performance is to your liking.

How’s the interior?

Cabin Space

Like the regular Escape, the hybrid version is wonderfully spacious for an SUV its size. Not all compact SUVs manage to have so much room and the Escape doesn't disappoint. Especially beneficial is the sliding rear seat that folds in a 60/40-split. The sliding feature is rare in vehicles this size and is available in all three trims. The seats offer a good amount of back support and most adults will feel comfortable in the back seat.

Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of this model is the cheap-looking materials throughout the cabin. While we appreciate the practicality of multiple storage compartments and the overall ergonomic design, the materials don't incite excitement. The Titanium trim attempts to solve this by raising the bar on design and materials. However, if stylish looks are a priority, the Escape will disappoint.

Infotainment and connectivity

By getting rid of the S trim, shoppers don't have to choose an inferior infotainment setup. All three trims come standard with Sync 3, Ford's infotainment system. It takes some getting used to, but it's more intuitive than other programs we've come across lately. Included with the Sync 3 are programs such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and access to FordPass Connect. With this program, drivers can start, warm up, or cool down their SUV through the app on their smartphone.

LIKES: All trims come with a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, so there's no need to squint while driving.

DISLIKES: The voice-activated navigation system on your phone is better than the one by Ford (standard on Titanium).

How about the technology and features?

The Escape hybrid comes with some of the latest advancements in automotive tech. Keyless entry, a remote start system, multiple charging ports throughout the cabin, and many safety programs are just a few of the more popular elements.

LIKES: Drivers will find many cubbies and storage compartments that are perfect for all of the electronics and accessories they carry with them all day.

- All steering wheels include buttons for cruise control and the infotainment system.

DISLIKES: Some drivers will find the Ice Blue instrument panel cluster lighting distracting,    especially when driving on rural roads.

Quick Quirks: The rotary gear shift takes some getting used to, but it's one of the few pieces of flair the interior provides.

Some additional features:

- Dual-zone climate control comes standard, so you don't have to worry about fighting over the internal temperature.

- A driver's footrest adds an extra touch of comfort, especially on long drives.

- Many safety programs come standard, including pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alert.

How’s the exterior?

Despite the cheap-looking interior, the exterior embodies a fun and sporty feel that matches the Escape's capabilities. The wind-swept sides and curvy edges give this SUV a look that will get drivers excited about exploring the countryside. A rear spoiler, dual chrome exhaust tips, and privacy glasses for the second-row sides and liftgates get included on all trims. Climbing up the trims, drivers will find extras such as fog lamps, heated glass, and a hands-free, foot-activated liftgate.

What warranty and safety does it offer?

The Escape hybrid comes with many safety features and a standard warranty program:

- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rates this model five out of five stars.

- All trims include the SOS Post-Crash Alert System, lane-keeping system, cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

- Limited warranty for 36,000 miles or three years.

- Powertrain warranty for 60,000 miles or five years.

- No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Are there any incentives and rebates for the ESCAPE HYBRID?
